The Western Cape Health Department said the province remains the country's drinking capital.
Statistics show more than half of the Cape's population consumes alcohol.
The department met with non-governmental organisations on Tuesday to discuss the issue.
At least 60 percent of those living in the province consume alcohol; of those one third abuse it.
The Health Department said this resulted in around 300 deaths every month.
The department’s Dr Tracy Naledi said the province lead the rest of the country in terms of the amount of alcohol people drink.
Globally, South Africa is ranked third on the list of countries with the highest rate of alcohol consumption.
Naledi said the department was looking at serious interventions to turn the tide. (News24)
