A would-be thief of Hornlee left a smelly 'calling card' in a home near the Green Hole on Leisure Island on Saturday, March 3 after she had first taken a leisurely, uninvited swim in the owners' pool.
She then dumped her wet clothes and broke into the home in the nude. The suspect appeared in court on Tuesday, April 17.
On the day of the incident, the home owners both left their home at 10:00 in the morning and returned at around 13:30 in the afternoon.
"My husband had got home about ten minutes before me, completely unaware that we had an intruder in our home upstairs in our bedroom!" says the lady of the house.
As she opened the lounge doors for some fresh air, she noticed that there was a Lilo floating in the pool. "I thought that was rather odd and asked if anyone had been swimming?"
Next she noticed a pile of wet clothes. "Gosh, whose are these?" she asked perplexed and turned back towards the house. "At that moment I noticed there was an unknown woman standing on our balcony, looking down!"
Her husband rushed upstairs while his wife alerted security personnel. Once upstairs it became clear that the intruder had smashed the windowpane of the balcony door and had then unlocked it to enter the main bedroom.
"She had fiddled with my stuff here and there and had taken some empty bags from my dressing room in which she had put some money, jeans, perfume and an old handbag of my mother-in-law."
At this stage the intruder had locked herself out onto the balcony again, wearing the slippers, vest and a jersey of the homeowner's wife. She also had the keys to the door with her.
"When my husband demanded the keys back, she didn't seem scared at all. In fact, she was very cocky as she sat down on the bed where he told her to wait. If she had been drinking, she certainly didn't seem drunk at all. She actually demanded her rights!"
It was then that the couple became aware of a very suspicious smell.
"I couldn't believe it! This person, who had absolutely violated our privacy had also 'cr***ed' in my walk-in closet! How disgusting is that? I mean, the toilet is literally around the corner from where she was stuffing the bags full of our belongings - when I asked her about it, she just blamed it on someone else!"
When security guards arrived and the police showed up, a group of day visitors at the Green Hole came closer and said that they knew the intruder and had invited her along. They claimed that they had earlier that day alerted the LIRA-guards on the island after they had noticed the same woman attempting to break into a combi.
Detective WO Johann Burmeister of Knynsa SAPS Detective Branch offered his free time to help apprehend the suspect. The 23-year-old suspect was arrested and a charge laid against her. The George Forensic Unit took fingerprints at the home the next day. According to Declan Nurse of Allsound Security, the report he received from the operations manager, Brent Linford, indicates that the intruder had three bags full of stolen goods with her.
