Wolvaardt first SA woman to record four ODI centuries

Proteas Women

Proteas batter Laura Wolvaardt stepped into the history books when she recorded her fourth One Day International century, a first for a South African female player.

Her undefeated 124 helped South Africa to a two-nil series lead over New Zealand following victory in the second match in Pietermaritzburg on Thursday.

Wolvaardt scored 124 off 141 deliveries, which included 15 fours, to lead from the front in the home side’s successful chase of New Zealand’s first innings score of 253 all out.

South Africa’s run chase saw a measured start by Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits (17) before the latter was the first wicket to fall in the sixth over, which was shortly followed by the wicket of Lara Goodall (3) with the score on 43/2.

South Africa’s innings was then rebuilt in fantastic fashion through a game-changing partnership between Wolvaardt and Suné Luus worth 98 runs for the third wicket.

The Proteas eventually completed the chase with ease, sealing the victory with 4.4 overs to spare.

The next encounter between the teams will be on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead in Durban with play scheduled to start at 9.30 on Supersport.
