When will Boks wear what jersey? Here are the guidelines

SA Rugby

The Rugby World Cup is in full swing as the Boks are focused on retaining the Web Ellis trophy in France.

Fans are anxiously waiting for the Pool B match against Ireland on Saturday as they are currently the number-one-ranked team in the world.

What is different from this year's World Cup is that the Bok jerseys have received almost as much attention as the team itself and fans are now left wondering when the team will be playing in their traditional green and gold.

A spokesperson for SARU says the Springboks are not permitted to wear the green and gold jersey in every Test match.

On Saturday, the Boks will wear their second alternate kit, which is all white, as the original kit is too similar to Ireland's green jersey.

The alternative jersey colour is white, but Nike proposed enhancing the plain look with a modern design drawing on various influences in a new combination to appeal to a new and wider audience.

SA Rugby released a 'jersey guide' for fans to understand the decisions and design choices on the Boks' match days.

  • The Springbok primary jersey of green and gold is always worn as the first choice whenever permitted.
  • On occasions where a jersey clash must be avoided, the Springboks may be required to wear an alternate jersey.
  • New colour blindness guidelines are in operation at the Rugby World Cup, which have increased the number of occasions on which one of the competing teams is required to wear an alternative jersey.

Alternative jerseys

SA’s first alternate is hyper-jade and white; the second is white with a hyper-jade collar.

Replicas of the primary (green) and alternate (hyper-jade) have been produced for sale.

Should the Springboks progress to the knockout stages of the competition, and if they are drawn as Team B against a team with a clashing colour the team will wear the hyper-jade alternate as the first option.

Jerseys are designed by sports team apparel manufacturers and ultimately approved by the relevant federation.

SARU says the Nike kit was presented to senior Springboks, who gave it their seal of approval.
