PRETORIA, April 13 (ANA) – It’s an old rivalry with a fresh twist when on Monday, Tukkies, from the University of Pretoria, will host their Stellenbosch counterparts Maties in the FNB Varsity Cup rugby final.
In a first for the tournament, the much-awaited final will be live-streamed on Facebook alongside the traditional television broadcast, ensuring the biggest reach possible.
The streaming was trialled with success during the 2016 Varsity Football final, but it’s a first for rugby where a host of millennial fans, in particular, enjoy the second screen experience whether at home or on the move.
This will potentially extend the reach to SuperSport’s almost five million-strong Facebook audience, offering free access to exciting rugby content in a predominantly youth market.
“The days of linear television are long gone and we are excited by the possibilities of multi-platform broadcasts such as this,” said Gideon Khobane, chief executive of SuperSport.
“Our Facebook page is vibrant and popular and this stream will be available all over Sub-Saharan Africa, so the reach is substantial.”
His views were echoed by Duitser Bosman, the Varsity Cup CEO, who said: “We were honoured to be involved in SuperSport’s first live streaming of a sporting event on Facebook last year. And we are very excited to be involved once again.
“It will mean reaching a wider audience than ever and will be particularly special for us as we celebrate our tenth anniversary in 2017. Now hundreds of students and alumni will have access to what should be the biggest final in the competition’s history.”
The FNB Varsity Cup final will also be broadcast on SS1 from 7pm. – African News Agency (ANA)
