Former Australia captain Steve Smith has apologised for his role in the ball-tampering controversy during the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.
“I want to, as captain of the Australian cricket team, I take full responsibility,” said Smith after arriving back in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday.
Smith spoke for the first time publicly following his 12-month ban from all domestic and international cricket imposed by Cricket Australia.
“I made a serious error in judgement. It was a failure of leadership, my leadership. I will do everything I can to make up for my mistake and the damage it’s caused.”
Asked if he blamed fellow senior player David Warner - who received the same ban - for his part in the incident, Smith again stressed his responsibility.
"I don't blame anyone, I'm the captain, it's on my watch and I take responsibility for what happened in Cape Town.” - ANA
