Team SA's unsung heroes grab Commonwealth medals

Team SA's bowlers, wrestlers and mountain biker all came to the party to ensure that four medals were added to the tally in Thursday's morning session at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

In the evening session on the track, South Africa's Wenda Nel earned a hard-fought bronze medal in the women's 400-metre hurdles.

In the visually impaired men's 100 metre final, South Africa's Ndodomzi Ntutu won gold in 11.02 seconds with countryman Hilton Langenhoven taking the silver in 11.27 sec.

Earlier, South African mountain biker Alan Hatherly collected a bronze in the men's cross country.

Hatherly's effort was extremely memorable, not only in the fact that he prevented the New Zealanders from taking all three medals, but also due to the fact that he had to make a comeback from a broken arm, to be fit in time to represent his country at the Commonwealth showpiece.

Another bronze went the way of the lawn bowlers in the mixed B6/B7 competition for people with disabilities where the trips line up of Tobias Botha, Willem Viljoen and Christopher Patton, collected a bronze medal.

There was no luck for the South Africans on the rhythmic gymnastics front, with North West Province's Grace Legote (13th) and Capetonian Chris-Marie van Wyk (16th) finding scores hard to come by in the 16-person individual all-around final.

The South African netball team pulled away in the final quarter to secure a fifth-place finish overall after defeating Uganda 53-42 in their final match of the Commonwealth Games.
