Team SA swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker has won South Africa’s first medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
The Tuks student claimed the silver medal on Tuesday in the 100 metre breastroke final.
Schoenmaker looked destined for gold at the turn but was hauled in over the last 50 metres by 17-year-old US teenager Lydia Jacoby.
Defending champion Lilly King had to settle for the bronze.
Schoenmaker, who set an Olympic record in the heats and was the fastest semi-final qualifier, will have another shot at Olympic glory in her favoured 200 metre breastroke event later in the week.
