Lions whizzkid, Elton Jantjies set a new Vodacom Super Rugby record as he scored all his team’s points, as they edged a tight contest against the Cheetahs 27-25 at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.
Jantjies hit nine penalties, breaking a long standing record shared by four players - Bulls Jannie Kruger in1996 and Derick Hougaard in 2007, Highlander Willie Walker in 2003 and former Cheetah Meyer Bosman in 2006 - as he kicked his side to a victory in a scrappy game which possibly set a record in the penalty count as well.
The Stormers had their new young forwards to thank for spearheading their drive to a 39-26 win over the Hurricanes in their opening Vodacom Super Rugby clash at Newlands in Cape Town.
Earlier on Saturday, winger Dom Shipperly streaked down the right touchline as the siren sounded, to score a last-gasp try that snatched a 25-21 victory for the Reds over the Waratahs in Sydney, while the Highlanders scored two tries in five second-half minutes to overhaul the Chiefs 23-19 in Hamilton.
