Stuart Baxter quits as Bafana head coach

Bafana Bafana head coach Stuart Baxter confirmed what many had been expecting ever since he called a press conference in Johannesburg on Friday - that he will be standing down from his position.

The Englishman had been in the middle of a five-year contract, having been appointed in May 2017.

This had been his second spell in charge of the South African national team, the first being in 2004.

Baxter recently led Bafana Bafana to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals, but received criticism over what was perceived as negative tactics, as well as his team selection.

He told the media that he was not pushed, but was stepping down on his own. "Supporter pressure, I never feel that because if you do, you shouldn't be in this job. Media pressure, its back ground noise - its part of the game. You guys have opinions and I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Respect is the important word for me and its a combination of the whole situation that I'm working in."

Baxter said he had handed over his technical report to SAFA and believed that Bafana Bafana was on track to qualify for the World Cup. - ANA
