A fire fanned by strong winds tore through the canals at St Francis Bay late yesterday destroying up to 100 homes.
Kouga Municipality Spokesperson Laura-Leigh Randall says most of the firefighters were sent home to sleep at about four o'clock this morning after having extinguished the fire.
Firefighters from the Cacadu District Municipality are still at the scene monitoring the situation and checking for flare-ups.
Randall says its estimated that about 100 houses were taken out by the blaze that started in the Royal Warf section of the canals at about 5:30pm yesterday.
Randall says the Executive Mayor, Booi Koerat, was in St Francis pretty much all of last night.
On behalf of the Kouga Council and municipality, he sends his heartfelt condolences to all who lost their homes in the blaze.
Mark Mey of the NSRI at St Francis says officials will keep a close eye on the situation this morning.
