Damien Willemse snatched victory at the death against Wales by slotting a penalty after full-time to give the Springboks a 32-29 victory over Wales and first blood in the first of three test series.

Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi, complimented Willemse for his performance, having moved to the flyhalf berth after Elton Jantjies was benched.

“We had to chase the game at times. The boys at the back took their opportunities well,” said Kolisi, whose team went into the half-time break down 18-3 to the Welsh at Loftus Versveld.

Speaking post-match, Captain Kolisi said the Springboks will have to bring the intensity from the word go in the second test in Bloemfontein.

Welsh Captain, Dan Biggar, who was one of four Welshmen to spend a stint in the sin bin, said he was proud of his team who put in a huge effort since being written off from the start.

“We played in the right areas and took our chances,” he said.

Biggar believes that Wales can take confidence from the performance going into the second test.

The Springbok tries came from Bongi Mbonambi, Malcolm Marx, Cheslin Kolbe, and a penalty try, with Willemse kicking two conversions and a penalty, while Elton Jantjies kicked a penalty.
