Sports Minister hails SA golden boy

South Africa's first medal at the London Olympic Games has been lauded by sports minister Fikile Mbalula.

He said in a statement last night that South Africa can now be counted amongst the best in the world.

Cameron van der Burgh secured the gold medal in the men's 100m breaststroke in a world record time to leave the SA team tied in 13th place in the medals table after two days of competition.

Mbalula said he was deeply touched when van der Burgh broke the world record in 58.46 seconds to become South Africa's first men's individual Olympic swimming champion.
