Southern Kings scrumhalf Kebe has big dreams

GARETH DUNCAN
PORT ELIZABETH, July 6 (ANA) – Southern Kings scrumhalf Ntando Kebe says this season has given him the belief that he can excel at higher levels.

Ntando Kebe has been one of the top finds during the Kings’ return to Super Rugby this season.

His vision and pace at halfback have added plenty of value to the team’s attacking play, especially when the forwards set the ideal platform for the backs to put pressure on the opposition defence.

He’s even received major compliments from Springbok head coach Allister Coetzee, who believed he’s been one of the most consistent South African scrumhalves during Super Rugby.

As an experienced Currie Cup campaigner (he’s played for Griquas, Boland and Border since 2010), Kebe said this season has given him a lot of confidence.

“This year has gone very well so far. I’ve taken my Super Rugby opportunity with both hands and embraced all the chances I get on the field,” Kebe told MyPlayers.

“Super Rugby is definitely a big step-up compared to the Currie Cup. You find yourself playing against some of the best international players, which provides a big challenge. The game is also a lot quicker and more physical.

“It’s been a great experience for me. It has added a lot to my game and my development as a player. As an outsider, I also had to adapt to the structures at the Kings. But I found myself among some familiar faces, like former Border team-mate Lukhanyo Am, which made it a bit easier to settle in.”

Kebe’s fine form was rewarded with a call-up to the SA ‘A’ squad, who played a two-match series against the England Saxons in June. This has created the hunger for more international rugby.

“Being part of the squad and training for an international match was a big eye-opener. Things are very professional and there was a positive culture and environment, which saw the players bond very well. I also learned from the other scrumhalves in the squad, which was great,” explained Kebe.

“I definitely want to play more international rugby. My big goal is to get my opportunity in the green and gold. It would be a dream come true to play for the Springboks. I know it won’t be easy, but I’m willing to work hard to achieve this dream.”

He added that he’s received a lot of support from his team-mates in East London.

“The Border players are in contact with me every day. It’s great hearing from them and their support motivates me. They always tell me that I’m representing the team on the Super Rugby stage, which I’m proud of. I believe more Border players can make the step-up if given the opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the Kings are preparing for a tough encounter against the Lions in Johannesburg this weekend. The PE-based franchise has struggled during Super Rugby, losing 11 of their 13 fixtures so far.

However, Kebe said the players are working hard to remain optimistic and confident.

“It was never a realistic goal to expect us to excel during our first season back in Super Rugby. We are a squad full of young and inexperienced players,” said Kebe. “There needs to be the realisation that we are a team that is building. We will grow from strength to strength to ensure we become more competitive at this level.

“The players know this. And we ensure we work together to become better and stronger as a unit.”

Off the field, Kebe is enjoying life in PE: “Away from rugby, I like to chill and relax at home with my housemates, who are great company. I enjoy going out for lunch and supper with my team-mates, like Sti Sithole and Thembalani Bholi to name a few.” – African News Agency (ANA)
