South Africa squeak through against Pakistan in CWC

@ProteasMenCSA

The Proteas won a nail-biting Cricket World Cup encounter against Pakistan in Chennai on Friday by a slim one wicket margin.

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat first, with South Africa chasing for only the second time in the tournament in India.

The victory saw the Proteas move to the top of the table.

Pakistan posted a total of 270, but despite their good bowling attack, could not stave off the determination of the South Africans who hung on to the end.

Tailenders, Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj, who hit the winning boundary, saw them across the line, with Shamsi also named Player of the Match for his four wickets for 60 runs.

“I didn’t think I’d be here at the end with my pads on,” Shamsi smilingly said.

Marco Jansen took three wickets for 43 runs, while Gerald Coetzee got a brace and Lungi Ngidi bagged one scalp.

Captain Temba Bavuma, who missed the last two matches due to injury, said the guys enjoyed the moment, but described the dressing as “chaos at the moment” having scraped through.

He admitted that they have not done well batting second in the tournament, but said he would also be enjoying the victory.   “We can’t say with conviction that we have the blueprint when we are chasing,” he said.

Commentators described the clash as the “best match of the tournament” so far.
