Nelson Mandela Bay's Nkululeko Apleni has returned home with the silver medal and the second best karateka ranking in the world. The former World Champion from Zwide was representing South Africa at the Japanese Shotokan Karate World Championships in Mexico City.
He was up against karatekas from 45 countries from across the world.
Apleni's father and trainer Sicelo said he was proud of his son who worked very hard to achieve his success.
Apleni currently trains in his garage with other young aspiring karatekas from his community.
He's made a call to local government and businesses to work together to build better training facilities in the previously disadvantaged areas that are suitable for all sports, including karate.
