18-year-old Jenienne Curr, a grade 12 pupil at Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown, won silver in the Junior Women's Single Sculls Final at the Junior World Rowing Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, at the weekend.
This is the first world rowing championship medal ever for a South African junior female athlete.
She contested well for the gold in the first three-quarters of the 2-thousand metre race, but was unable to match the final sprinting pace of the reigning World Champion, Anne Beenken as she finished 4 seconds behind the German.
Laura Oprea of Romania was a further 5 seconds adrift in third place.
Jenienne's coach Donavan Cech is with her in Bulgaria and reckons his star pupil has a bright future in the sport as she moves up to the under-23 age group next year.
