South Africa went down in a shock 23-19 defeat at the hands of Ireland in their opening match of the IRB Junior World Championship in Stellenbosch on Monday night.
The Irish led 13-3 at the break and managed to score a try in each half, whereas South Africa relied heavily on the boot of flyhalf Tony Jantjies - younger brother of Elton, to keep their hopes of victory alive.
The big win on Monday came from four-time defending champion New Zealand who destroyed Samoa 63-nil.
England thumped Italy 64-5 and Australia overwhelmed Scotland 67-12.
Wales were comfortable 44-18 winners over Fiji and in the closest game of a pretty one-sided day, Argentina edged France 18-15.
Food for thought for many of the teams ahead of the next round of fixtures on Friday - the Baby Boks playing Italy.
