The chase is on for that prize-winning Yellow Fin Tuna and it all begins with the traditional blessing of the fleet as the sun rises over Algoa Bay on Thursday morning.

At exactly 07h00, some 45 deep-sea angling boats from around the country will gather off Shark Rock Pier for the traditional blessing of the fleet.

It marks the start of the annual 3-day Williams Hunt Isuzu Tuna Classic hosted by the PE Deep Sea Angling Club.

Richard Donaldson of the organising committee says bigger Tuna recently started making their appearance in the fishing grounds offshore from Cape Recife.

“These Yellow Fin Tuna are targeting the massive shoals of sardine which have begun congregating in our waters to start their journey towards Kwazulu Natal for the annual Sardine Run,” said Donaldson. “Some big tuna of up to 102 kg have been caught in our waters in recent weeks so hopefully the competitors in the Tuna Classic will also be able to land one or two big ones.”

The record for the Tuna classic was set in 2013 and stands at a whopping 102.7kg

Donaldson says the public is welcome to go down to the PE Deep Sea Angling Club in the harbour from around 15h30 each day to watch the daily catches of Yellowfin Tuna being weighed in.
