An exciting new sevens rugby tournament, named 7’sPL, will hit Outeniqua Park, George on December 14 and 15 this year.
The tournament, with prize money of R1 million, will be run by the South-Western Districts Rugby Union and in conjunction with Willem Strauss Sports Promotions.
The SA Rugby Union (Saru) granted permission in 2011 through its Games and Competitions Committee for the hosting of a Sevens Tournament in George.
SWD president Hennie Baartman said at the announcement of the tournament yesterday that the competition would add value to the region - and help fill the economic void left by the re-location of the IRB sevens to Port Elizabeth.
Twelve teams will participate in the competition.
Shortly after the announcement, a young SWD team featuring a number of club-players took on a Western Province Vodacom Cup team at Outeniqua Park and did very well to hold their Western Cape neighbours to a 40-all draw.
Then it was the turn of reigning Currie Cup Champions the Lions, who ran in 13 tries and a penalty try in beating a Southern Kings outfit 88-nil.
