Semenya not allowed to defend her 800m title in Qatar

Berlin (dpa) - South African runner Caster Semenya says she is "very disappointed" at not being able to defend her 800 metres title at September's world championships in Qatar.

She will no longer be exempt from new testosterone rules set by global athletics body the IAAF after the Swiss Federal Supreme Court on Monday reversed a previous ruling which suspended the application of the regulations.

The IAAF says female athletes like Semenya, who is believed to be intersex and has high testosterone for a woman, have an unfair advantage over others and their hormone levels should be limited using medication.

Semenya, 28, lost an initial appeal at the Switzerland-based Court of Arbitration for Sport and then went to the Swiss Supreme Court, which indicated that it has not finally ruled on the matter as a whole.

The IAAF previously said it needs "a protected category for females where eligibility is based on biology and not on gender identity."

On Wednesday, the IAAF issued a statement which reads:

'The IAAF welcomes the Swiss Federal Tribunal's decision today to revoke its Super-Provisional Order of 31 May 2019 after hearing the IAAF's arguments.

'This decision creates much-needed parity and clarity for all athletes as they prepare for the World Championships in Doha this September.
