South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee president Gideon Sam has confirmed the Paralympic athletes will earn the same bonuses their able-bodied counterparts received on their triumphant return from the London Games.
Sam was speaking in London on Sunday after sports minister Fikile Mbalula surprised Paralympic medal winners by announcing they deserved equal financial rewards.
Sam said they've already started the ball rolling and have asked Sascoc CEO Tubby Reddy and the director general for sport Alec Moemi to go and find the money so that it is sorted out by the time the athletes arrive home on Tuesday.
Sam paid tribute to the icons of Paralympic sport, singling out runner Oscar Pistorius, cyclist Ernst van Dyk and Natalie du Toit who bowed out of all competitive swimming at these Games.
