South African rugby president Mark Alexander has praised the national men's sevens team for their performance at the Paris Olympic games.
The Blitzboks secured a bronze medal and the first medal for team South Africa at the weekend after clinching a last minute victory against Australia beating them 26-19.
As a token of his pride, Alexander is set to host the team on Monday evening.
"They came here as underdogs and not many people gave them a chance," said Alexander.
"But they proved that the South African fighting spirit is alive and well in them. They made us proud with their efforts and we want to thank the team for that."
SA rugby president also touched on the future of rugby and said pro-active steps are being taken for improvements to further support the team in further Olympic endeavours.
Alexander said the South African Rugby Union (SARU) will go back to the drawing board to look at how they restructure the organisation to meet the ever-changing sports demands.
"The restructuring will be evident in the upcoming HSBC SVNS tournament which will take place in December.
Alexander noted that the team went through a number of challenges since the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic but supplemented it by saying that they played in true "Bok style at the Olympic games" and will be looking to build on that.
"I am sure the crowds will come out in numbers to support our bronze medalists," he said.
