The SABC says it would have cost the Public Broadcaster a staggering 400-million rand to broadcast the rugby world cup in Japan on television and radio.
That's according to SABC chief executive, Madoda Mxakwe, who briefed a Parliamentary Committee on Tuesday on why there will be no rugby on SABC channels.
He told MP's that the cash-strapped public broadcaster cannot afford that amount of money after failing to reach a settlement with Supersport, which owns both the TV and radio rights for the competition which kicks off in Japan on Friday.
This will mean that millions of people will miss out on the Rugby World Cup.
The Springboks will field an unchanged 23 for the first time since the last Rugby World Cup for their opening match against New Zealand of the 2019 version in Yokohama on Saturday.
Kick-off is at 11h45 SA time.
