CAPE TOWN, September 6 (ANA) – South Africa’s Kevin Anderson advanced to his first Grand Slam semifinal on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning, SA time) at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, New York City, defeating American Sam Querrey 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
Anderson advanced to the semifinals at age 31, emerging from a back-and-forth showdown between two big servers. At the end of the slugfest, Anderson smashed 22 aces and Querrey close behind with 20.
The 28th-seeded Anderson is appearing in his 34th major tournament and becomes the first South African to reach a US Open semifinal in the Open era.
"This is incredible, at this stage and playing on one of the most famous courts in the world, it feels absolutely fantastic," said Anderson as reported on Supersport.com.
He becomes the first South African player to reach the last four of the US Open since Cliff Drysdale in 1965 and since tennis turned professional three years later.
