Runner bags first ever medal for his country


Jubilation erupted across Grenada on Monday night when world champion runner Kirani James earned the island its first ever Olympic medal -- gold, in the London Games 400m final.

The 19-year-old clocked 43.94 seconds ,a new Caribbean record, as he stormed to the finish at the Olympic Stadium.

Luguelin Santos of the Dominican Republic was second in 44.46 seconds, while Trinidad and Tobago's Lalonde Gordon claimed bronze in a personal best 44.52 seconds.

Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic stormed to victory in the men's 400m hurdles final - winning in a time of 47.63sec, taking a title he first collected at the 2004 Athens Games.

South African Athlete Andre Olivier automatically qualified for the men's 800m semi-final on Tuesday after finishing a comfortable third in his heat, with a time of 1:46.42.
