Gqeberha-born soccer star, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns Captain Ronwen Williams made history as he has been nominated in the prestigious Ballon d'Or awards for the Yashin Trophy- a first for South Africa.
These are annual awards presented by the French magazine France Football to honour the player who has performed the best over the previous season.
Mamelodi Sundowns said: "Congratulations to our shot-stopper and Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams on being nominated for the 2024 Yashin Trophy! The Yellow Nation salutes you."
Social media has been a buzz since the announcement yesterday.
Various soccer clubs such as Cape Town City, Orlando Pirates, and Supersport United FC wished Williams well.

Williams became a national hero after his iconic saves at the 2023 AFCON quarterfinals against Cape Verde which saw South Africa advance to the semi-finals.
