Proteas thrash England by an innings in 1st Test

KG puts England to the sword with another wicket

Cricket South Africa

South Africa have thrashed England by an innings and 12 runs inside three days in the first test at Lords.

The Proteas never looked back after making 326 in reply to England's below par 1st innings 165.

England could not live with a big deficit of 161 runs and were bowled out for 149 runs in their second innings in a mere 37.4 overs, midway through day three.

South Africa's quick bowlers were all impressive with man of the match Kagiso Rabada adding another two scalps to the five he took in the first innings.

Lungi Ngidi got the prized wicket of Joe Roodt for six, Anrich Nortje took three wickets in an impressive spell of express bowling and Marco Jansen cleaned up the tail with two late wickets.

In fact, Nortje's average speed of 149 km/h for the 6 deliveries he bowled in the 25th over of the second innings was the quickest over England have faced at home in the past decade of Test cricket.

The spinner Keshav Maharaj also played his part and it was his two wickets before lunch that actually prized open the England second innings.

The Proteas victory puts them 1-nil up in the three test series, with the second Test starting at Old Trafford next Thursday, 25 August.
