Graeme Smith made 115 for his 24th test century and Jacques Kallis resumes tomorrow on 107 alongside Jacques Rudolph on 13.
It was Kallis' 42nd test hundred and he put on exactly 200 for the third wicket with Smith.
The New Zealand first innings was wrapped up early in the morning session for 273 after some powerful hitting by tailender Trent Boult, giving the home side a 35-run lead.
