Eastern Province Cricket held its AGM recently and for the first time in many years posted positive results in all areas of its business with many notable accomplishments over the last financial year.
President Donovan May pointed out the highlights of the past financial year in his Annual President’s Report.“We have brought back normality and stability by Directors and staff understanding their fiduciary duties and executing their duties with care and with growth of the company in mind.”
An unqualified audit report indicating that profits are increasing with sustainable cash flows were posted by Auditors Nkonki Incorporated. In terms of governance a stable Board of Directors who met regularly has contributed to the overall success of the Company.
CSA’s annual scorecard programme has revealed that EPC has moved from 8th to 5th position which was brought about by improvement in all areas of amateur cricket. Club cricket which remains a high priority for EPC has seen clubs being assisted with balls, transport allowances, equipment and assistance with facilities. The Club structure will be undergoing a change and EPC is looking forward to a positive turn around for club cricket in the new season.
The coaching development programmes are an integral part of making sure EPC develops good coaches. There are currently 4 coaches completing their CSA Level 3 course. KFC-Mini Cricket continues to play a major role in the province and has seen a 10% increase in participation this year.
Both the Umpires and Scorers Associations have shown great improvement, however the need for both umpires and scorers at club level is an ongoing concern.
Women’s Cricket is a work in progress with not many clubs having women’s teams, however a very successful Women’s Club Tournament was hosted to make up for matches not played during the season. Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekerk have done the province proud being selected for the national team and their outstanding performances in the ICC Women’s World Cup.
The EP Provincial team won the Africa T20 Cup with captain Jon-Jon Smuts captaining the Warriors and being selected for the Protea T20 team. The first ever Mayoral Cup was successfully staged at St George’s with club teams playing the final under lights.
The stadium is currently undergoing a major revamp and St George’s is looking forward to hosting a T20 Global League team for the next 10 years.
“Our relationship with the Metro is at an all-time high and we intend to build on this in the future. Their commitment to assisting EPC in the form of a grant is welcomed. We know times are tough and as such we are constantly aware of the need for cost cutting to make sure cricket services come first.” said May.
