Australia's Ricky Ponting has announced that he will retire from test cricket after this week's third Test against South Africa at the Wacca.

The 37-year-old former captain told a news conference in Perth a short while ago that he had decided to call it a day as he felt he could no longer contribute to the team in the way he once had.

Only yesterday, Australian coach Mickey Arthur backed Ponting for inclusion in next year's Ashes campaign against England.
