There'll be a hive of activity at Kings Beach in Nelson Mandela Bay when the 2023 DHL Lifesaving South African Championships kicks off Thursday.

Over 1500 "lifesaving specialists" will be competing in the surf and sand on the Metro's main beach, as well as competing in the events at the Newton Park Swimming Pool.

NMBM Mayoral Committee Member for Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, Bassie Kamana, said it was only fitting to host the championships in the Metro, as it has "the most beautiful beaches in the country."

"We continue to establish NMB as a preferred sporting destination and welcome the economic injection into the City," he said.

Kamana said the seven-day championship will take place during the school holidays to accommodate the Junior and Nipper divisions.

"Last year saw a limited number of spectators permitted due to COVID-19 restrictions but for the first time since 2019, the event is open to the public, who are welcome to cheer on their lifesaving heroes."

In a statement, LSM Director of Sport, Craig van Rooyen, said he was "proud to be part of such a prestigious event" and was looking forward to top performances, and great competition in both the pool and surf over the seven days in Gqeberha.
