New Zealand has won the Canada Sevens Tournament in Vancouver with a gripping 19-14 victory over South Africa in the Cup final.

Australia finished third, after beating Fiji 19-12.

In the earlier quarterfinals Fiji beat the United States 31-26, while South Africa blitzed Wales 31-0.

In the first semi-final, South Africa beat Fiji convincingly 31-19 and in the second, New Zealand continued their unbeaten run with a 28-19 win over Australia.

The Springbok Sevens moved to within one point of leaders Fiji at the top of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series standings despite the loss against New Zealand.

In the weekend's Super Rugby action, the Cell C Sharks earned the favourable status as South Africa's only unbeaten franchise, after defeating the DHL Stormers, while the Toyota Cheetahs registered their first win of the season, and the Emirates Lions and Southern Kings suffered defeats.

The Lions suffered their first defeat of the season against the Highlanders, going down 34 - 15 in Dunedin.

The Cheetahs secured a nail-biting 32-31 victory against the Sunwolves in Singapore.

In Port Elizabeth, the Southern Kings showed immense character to challenge the Chiefs, but the New Zealanders were to good and registered a morale-boosting 58-24 victory.

In the final match of the weekend, the Sharks snatched a late 18-13 victory against the Stormers at Newlands.

The Vodacom Bulls had a bye.
