Manchester United win Europa League first leg clash

Manchester United made a winning start to their Europa League debut last night after goals from Ashley Young and Javier Hernandez handed them a 2-0 first-leg victory over Ajax at the Amsterdam Arena.

United had found themselves in European football's second-tier tournament following their shock failure to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League last December.

Ditto for neighbours Manchester City - who recovered from a goal down to edge defending champions Porto 2-1 - a late goal from substitute Sergio Aguero completing a precious away win for Roberto Mancini's side.
