Steven Makoka from Gauteng North Athletics Club is the new SA Half Marathon champion.

He beat Elroy Galant in a sprint finish on the Port Elizabeth beachfront on Saturday morning in the Nelson Mandela Bay ASA Half Marathon Championship.

Cool conditions were perfect for a fast race and Makoka duly delivered in 1hr-1min-21sec with Galant nine seconds back in second place.

Precious Mashele from Central Gauteng was third and Melikaya Frans, the first EP athlete came home in a "highly credible" fourth place, just 37 seconds behind the winner.

In the ladies race it was a first and second for Ethiopia, with Genet Abdukardi Genet winning in 1hr-11min-45-sec from Elisabet Arsedo.

Gauteng's Cornelia Joubert was the first SA Athlete home in the women's division in third place.
