China's top player Li Na battled into the third round of the Australian Open in Melbourne earlier on Wednesday with a 6 2 7 5 victory over Olga Govortsova of Belarus.
Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska stormed to her 11th straight win of the year, completing a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu.
Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany also reached round three with a straights sets win over Lucie Hradecka.
Amongst the men: Former Wimbledon finalist Tomas Berdych advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 win over Guillaume Rufin of France
There were also second rounds wins for Japan's 16th seed Kei Nishikori, Spanish 10th seed Nicolas Almagro and American 20th seed Sam Querrey.
