Cricket South Africa

India have beaten South Africa by 113 runs in the first test at Supersport Park, Centurion. Its the first time they have ever beat South Africa in a Test match at Centurion as they go 1-nil up in the 3-Test series.

Set an improbable 305 for victory, South Africa resumed on 94 for four on Thursday morning, needing another 211 for victory, and were bowled out for 191 shortly after lunch.

India chipped away and grabbed three key wickets in the morning session of captain Dean Elgar for a fighting 77, Quinten de Kock for a quick-fire 21 and Wiaan Mulder for just one.

South Africa went to lunch on 182 for 7 but after the resumption, it was all over within 12 minutes.

The tireless Mohammed Shami dismissed the debutant Marco Jansen for 13 and the spinner Ravi Ashwin then wrapped up proceedings, dismissing Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi with successive deliveries, both without scoring.

Temba Bavuma was left stranded on 35 not out as he backed up his fighting half century in the first innings.

Indian opener KL Rahul was named man-of-the-match for his superb knock of 123 runs off 260 deliveries in the visitors' first innings score of 327.

There's a quick turn around now with the 2nd test in the three test series getting underway at the Wanderers on Monday the 3rd of January.
