The Springboks have a date with destiny, a possible fourth Rugby World Cup title, after their second one-point, heart-stopping win over England at Stade de France on Saturday night.
The Springboks got off to a rocky start, having to field a barrage of high balls from England who took an early lead, eventually going into the break leading 12-6.
The fabled ‘bomb squad’ came on in the second half and immediately helped shift the momentum in the scrums and other facets of the game.
RG Snyman got the only try of the match in the 68th minute which was borne out of sheer grit and determination.
Handre Pollard, who came on in the first half, was cool as ice as he slotted a long range kicked the conversion, and also slotted a long-range penalty.
He was also named Man of the Match, saying post-match that it was “unbelievable” to get through. “The fight the boys showed, they never gave up,” Pollard said.
A breathless Captain Siya Kolisi said their hard work paid off, a week after their 29-28 win over hosts France.
“It was ugly today, but we found a way. We found a way to fight back. England did so well in the kicking game. Our discipline was awful, but we showed what we can do with the full 23,” Kolisi said.
He also paid tribute to the travelling fans in France and the support from South Africans at home, saying that the clash against New Zealand next week will be another tough encounter.
Coach, Jacque Nienaber, said it took something special to unlock England, who put us under a lot of pressure. He said the replacements brought the energy that the team needed.
