Lewis Hamilton made history at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi on Sunday afternoon when he became the first man ever to win 100 Formula One Grand Prix.
Hamilton had been stuck on 99 wins since the British Grand Prix in July.
There was heart break for McLaren’s Lando Norris who decided to stay out on slicks as the rain arrived with four laps to go while he was leading and within touching distance of his maiden Grand Prix win.
Strategically, Mercedes made the right call by bringing Hamilton, who was second at the time, into the pits and switching to the intermediate rain tyre.
He was able to hunt down Norris who was hardly able to keep his McLaren on the track, and ultimately did pit, by which time it was too late. Norris wound up finishing in 7th place.
Max Verstappen also pitted in the wet and finished in a remarkable second place, having started from the back of the grid after making the call to put in a fresh Honda power unit.
However, it was a net gain for the Red Bull driver because he now has that power unit all driven-in and firing for the remainder of the season – even if he did relinquish the Championship lead to Hamilton who now leads him by just two points.
Carlos Sainz rounded out the podium in third place for Ferrari.
