AC Milan advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League last night after Arsenal fell agonisingly short of a remarkable comeback despite an emphatic 3-0 victory over the Italian champions at the Emirates.
Arsenal had been left needing to pull off one of the biggest comebacks in European history after suffering a 4-0 first leg thrashing against the Serie A leaders in the San Siro last month.
Three first half goals had the Gunners faithful daring to dream of a miracle but Milan regrouped and stood firm after the break - preventing another score and advancing 4-3 on aggregate.
Two time European champions Benfica also reached the quarterfinals with a convincing 2-0 win over Russia's Zenit St Petersburg.
Benfica overturned a 3-2 deficit from the first leg in Russia to progress 4-3 on aggregate.
