The current Guinness PRO14 season has been suspended in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The PRO14 is an international rugby league, with cross-border travel inevitable which brings with it unique challenges.
Tournament Director, David Jordan said with governments in Italy and Ireland already putting in place clear directives and restrictions around public activities and travel, the decision to suspend the competition was appropriate.
He said it was in the best interests of everyone that games were not played at this time.
The suspension has been directed by the board of Celtic Rugby Designated Activity Company and would remain under constant review.
The Isuzu Southern Kings and the Toyota Cheetahs are the two South African franchises in the competition.
