The Springbok Sevens team won the gold medal at the Rugby Sevens event of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday night when they produced a brilliant performance to defeat Fiji 31-7 in a pulsating Final in Birmingham.
New Zealand beat Australia in the playoff for 3rd to claim the bronze.
Zain Davids, who took over the captaincy from injured regular skipper Siviwe Soyizwapi, said: "I have a little bit of mixed emotions at the moment, but mostly I'm happy as we came out here and gave our all, and I think we can be very happy with our performance against a great team like Fiji."
Earlier: The SA Women's Sevens team comfortably beat Sri Lanka 52-0 to conclude the tournament on a high, finishing in seventh position.
And in the pool in Birmingham, Olympic champion Tatjana Schoenmaker was in a league of her own on her way to defending her 200m breaststroke title, winning in a time of 2:21.92 to claim Commonwealth Gold.
Her Tuks team mate and product of Pearson High School in Gqeberha, Kaylene Corbett took home the bronze medal in the same race.
“I think I turned on the last 50 and I literally was like – God, please take the wheel,” said Corbett afterwards. “I gave everything, and I stood having an interview after the race and I could feel my knees buckling so I knew that was the best performance I could get out of myself.”
Chad le Clos had to settle for silver in the 200m butterfly but in so doing, equalled the all-time record for any athlete at the Commonwealth Games, taking his collection to 18 medals.
