Glory for Border womens' rugby team

Border on Saturday succeeded in securing a hat-trick of SARU Women's Interprovincial titles as they defeated the Blue Bulls 20-9 at the BCM Stadium in East London in what marked their third home final in a row.

The Free State, meanwhile, defeated the Leopards 22-5 to win the B Section of the Women's Interprovincial Competition.

The A Section final was hard-fought as the teams gave everything on attack and defence. With neither team giving an inch, the Blue Bulls took a narrow 3-0 lead at the break.

Border, however, found their rhythm and confidence in the second half and managed to score four tries, two by flank Lusanda Dumke and one a piece by lock Zandiswa Xozwa and centre Nolonwabo Bomela.

In return the Blue Bulls were only able to add to more penalties to their score for a total of nine points in the match.

The four tries for Border allowed them to complete a memorable season in which they secured four tries or more in each of their seven matches.

In the B Section final, which was the curtain-raiser to the main final, the Free State overcame a tight first half to secure well-deserved victory.

The Bloemfontein side held a slender 10-5 lead at the break after touching down for two tries. But they built on this form in the second half with fullback Merriam Ntlafhu completing her hat-trick of tries to add to one by one by Anzel Venter and a conversion by Lindiwe Masole.

The victory for Free State earned them a full house of victories for the season.
