Federer reaches third round on blue clay

 Roger Federer reached the third round as he sweated out a tough win on Thursday in his first match on the blue clay of the Madrid Masters, holding off Canada's Milos Raonic 4-6, 7-5, 7-6

Federer next plays 14th seed Richard Gasquet of France, a 7 5 6 3 winner against Serb Viktor Troicki.

Amid the spotlight on the blue clay, which has drawn heavy criticism, second seed Rafael Nadal beat Russian Nikolay Davydenko 6-2, 6-2.
