Famous win for Madibaz

Maties won their top-of-the-log Varsity Cup battle with Tukkies last night whilst defending champions UCT suffered a dramatic last-gasp loss at the hands of the NMMU Madibaz in Port Elizabeth.

The Maties, gunning for a fourth Varsity Cup, claimed a 23-22 win over Tukkies in Stellenbosch.

There was plenty of drama in Port Elizabeth as the home team Madibaz scored a 23-21 win over UCT with the last kick of the game.

Replacement back Bradley Kretzman was the hero with a a long-range effort at goal which he achieved, despite hitting the crossbar.

It meant a stunning first-ever Varsity Cup, and Monte Taljaard Trophy Match victory for NMMU over the Men from Cape Town who, now, cannot afford to lose another game in a bid for semifinal qualification.

UJ romped to a convincing 50-18 win over Shimlas and NWU-Pukke beat Twane University of Technology 52-8.

In the Varsity Shield Competition, Fort Hare caused a big upset by beating University of the Western Cape 23-21 on their own turf
