Former Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has parted ways with EP Rugby as head coach as he turns his attention to a new career in politics.
De Villiers confirmed to AlgoaFM News on Friday that he was about to hit the campaign trail for the November 1 local government elections as the GOOD Party’s mayoral candidate for the Drakenstein Municipality in the Western Cape.
De Villiers announced earlier in the week that he was joining Patricia de Lille’s GOOD Party and said he would be taking his life experiences in rugby into his new venture in politics.
De Villiers had been contracted to EP Rugby until the end of the year but said with everything going so quiet on that front, it had prompted him to look for other opportunities elsewhere.
EP Rugby Acting President Maasdorp Cannon said work security and work stability appeared to be at the forefront of De Villiers’ decision.
He said EP Rugby respected his decision and that as far as he was concerned it was a cordial parting of ways with immediate effect.
Cannon said the EP Executive would now meet on the 2nd of October with an eye on appointing a replacement coach for the 2022 season where EP Rugby will once again be campaigning nationally at u20, women and Currie Cup 1st division level. "You could say we are now in pursuit of a new coach," he said.
Cannon added that there was not any bad blood between EP Rugby and their former coach and that he believed De Villiers would be able to successfully channel his positive nature and energy into politics.
