Mdantsane-born boxer, Ludumo Lamati, has spent five days in an induced coma at Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Lamati collapsed in the 12th round of his fight against WBC silver featherweight defending champion Nick Ball on Saturday night.
Boxing Promoter, Larry Weinstein, told Algoa FM News on Thursday that the 31-year-old Lamati had "a bad night" after doctors earlier said that he was in a stable condition.
He said his mother, Joyce, and girlfriend, Chay Chadday, will be joining him in Northern Ireland once they have received their passports and visas.
"They did say to us the other day that the scans have shown an improvement. We are going to look at reducing his medication and bringing him out (of the coma)," he said.
Weinstein said in his career Lamati was never "dropped or counted once," adding that even on Saturday night "he was never counted."
He said it was a good fight and it was a surprise when he threw in the towel with 40 seconds to go.
Weinstein said Lamati walked to his corner and sat down before he collapsed.
Lamati held the IBO super bantamweight title from June 2021 to May 2022 and competed in the 2011 World Championships as an amateur.
