Scotland drew first blood with the opening try in the Cell C Nelson Mandela Bay Sevens but defending champion New Zealand hit back almost immediately to level the scores at seven all at half time.
Ben Lam put New Zealand ahead 2 minutes into the second half with the All Blacks second try in the Pool B opener. That’s how it stayed and New Zealand are up and running – they beat Scotland 14-7 to begin their SA title defence on a winning note.
Fiji ran riot over England in the second game – also in Pool B and led 17-7 at the break. Fiji went on to win the match 29-19 with five sparkling tries.
In the first game in Pool C and third of the day, Kenya led Argentina 21-0 at half time. Bit of a fight back by Argentina in the second half but Kenya hang on to win 21-17.
