Dijana defends Comrades title in record-breaking time

Comrades

Records fell at the 2023 Comrades Marathon after Tete Dijana defended his title in a record-breaking time of 5 hours, 13 minutes, and 58 seconds on Sunday.

He beat the record of 5:18:19 set by David Gatebe in 2016.

Hot on Dijana’s heels was Piet Wiersma of the Netherlands who appeared to be hauling Dijana in as the finish line loomed.

Third place went to Edward Mothibi.

The women’s race was won by Gerda Steyn in a time of 5:44:56, who also set a “down-run record” previously held by Frith van der Merwe who ran a time of 5:54:43 in 1989.

The down-run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban made a second consecutive appearance on the race schedule for the 96th edition of the race.
