The Eastern Province Golf Union is mourning the loss of arguably its finest-ever senior amateur golfer.
David Konzani passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 55 after a year-long battle with cancer.
Konzani made history two years ago when he won the SA Senior Amateur Strokeplay Championship at his home course at Humewood by a massive 12 shots against a field featuring the top senior amateur golfers in the country.
He secured the number one ranking in the country in SA Senior Amateur Golf which qualified him to play in the British Senior Amateur but sadly illness prevented him from making that dream trip.
At the age of 50, Konzani was named in EP's National Interprovincial side. Many of his young team mates were in their twenties.
The EP Golf Union's Director of Golf Gregory de Doncker told AlgoaFM Sport that Konzani was a big inspiration to the younger generation of golfer in the province.
He said everyone looked up to him as he had such a wonderful demeanor both on and off the golf course. He wore a permanent smile that belied the fierce competitive nature that burned inside and made him such a fierce and formidable competitor.
Konzani is survived by his wife and four children.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
